Are You Buying It?

Some love it. Some hate it.  Some don’t want to live with it but none of us can live without it. It’s the heart and soul of commerce. I’m talking about sales.

It’s time for a makeover for the reputation of sales. Here’s my definition: Sales is communication that influences someone to make a decision that is in their own best interest.

Yes, I know there are self-serving individuals in sales that make you feel slimed. Those are the salespeople that give the profession a black eye and the truth is, they will never experience long-term success. The reality is, sales is an honorable profession and is among the top-paying jobs in the U.S. – only at that level it’s called “marketing.” Okay, so Marketing is communication that influences someone to make a decision that is in their own best interest.

Consider this; the most valuable sales position on the planet is parenting. The hours are rough but the reward is huge. Without learning how to influence your children to choose well and think it was their idea – you’re toast.

The second most valuable sales position is teaching. Yes, you heard that right. There are thousands of brilliant people who have a grasp of an intense amount of information. But without communicating in a way that motivates the student to learn….nada. Boring drivel with no result other than frustration.

I’ve found that teaching “sales techniques” is invaluable. But the  truth is, I teach effective communication skills to marketers who are passionate about their mission and their message.

So are you buying it? Or are you selling it?
